Stress Buster Newsletter - April 2010

Get into the garden to reduce stress

Resident GardeningSpring is here. And here’s a great spring way to get mind and body working well. First, get out into the garden and clear away the old plants from last year, prune back dead wood and dig through your compost heap. Gardening uses both your upper and lower body muscles, and gives you mild resistance training from the tools you use. Amazingly digging can be an aerobic activity after just 15 to 20 minutes. And the best news is that digging burns 329 calories per hour. That’s the equivalent of playing a doubles tennis match or waterskiing.

Your physical workout also helps boost feelings of well-being as you throw out the old. So now it’s time to bring in the new and plant some flowers. But don’t just buy pots of already-flowering plants. Make sure you also plant some bulbs so you get that amazing feeling seeing something you planted poke out of the soil, grow and flower. Caring for another living thing (whether a person or a plant) is one way to boost feelings of happiness. So get growing (and if you run out of gardens to dig, come and join us in ours!).

Hello brain, how you doing?

You can train your body to peak fitness. But how about your brain?

The whole office recently spent a Saturday trying a very simple type of yoga called Brain Wave Vibration. Basically it involves wiggling your head gently from side to side. Sounds odd, we know, but these small movements of the head apparently stimulate the brain stem which controls your breathing, heart rate and stress response.

The system was created by Ilchi Lee, president of the Korea Institute of Brain Science, to help heal himself after a bad riding accident; doctors thought he would take six months to recover, but with brain training he was back on his feet in four weeks.

We all thought it was a great stress management tool and felt very chilled out after just one session. But judge for yourself at bodynbrain.co.uk.
