What is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is a day to recognise the progress made towards gender equality and to acknowledge the challenges that still lie ahead. The theme this year for IWD 2024 is #inspireinclusion, highlighting the importance of celebrating diversity and empowerment across all areas of society.

At The Stress Management Society, We Stand with Women

Here at The Stress Management Society, we are proud to have a strong female presence within our team. International Women’s Day holds significance for us as we recognise and celebrate the contributions of women to our organisation and to society as a whole.

Celebrating Women’s Contributions to Mental Health

As part of Women’s History Month, we want to pay tribute to some remarkable women who have made significant contributions to the field of mental health. These women have not only shaped clinical practice but have also challenged societal perceptions and inspired positive change.

Notable Women in Psychology:

Marsha Linehan: Renowned for her groundbreaking work in the development of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Marsha Linehan has revolutionised the treatment of mental health disorders. Her approach, combining elements of cognitive-behavioural therapy with mindfulness and acceptance, has provided hope and healing to countless individuals.

Mary Whiton Calkins: A trailblazer in psychology, Mary Whiton Calkins made history as the first female president of the American Psychological Association. Her tireless advocacy for women in academia and her groundbreaking research have left an indelible mark on the field of psychology.

Ellen Kitch Childs: A champion for marginalised communities, Ellen Kitch Childs dedicated her career to advocating for the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community. As a clinical psychologist, she played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of female mental health and challenging gender bias within the field.

Dr. Gloria Wilcox: Dr. Gloria Wilcox’s ‘feeling wheel’ is a testament to her innovative contributions to the field of mental health. This tool, utilized in our very own Mental Health Champions course, helps individuals identify and articulate their emotions more precisely, empowering them to take control of their mental well-being.
