Has the UK heatwave got you feeling a bit parched?

Posted on

Here in the UK we do not experience very high temperatures very often, and according to the Met Office this spell of intense heat is here to stay all summer.

The good news is, you can get your tan on without jetting away to the Caribbean, but you MUST stay hydrated. As temperature rises, thanks to perspiration our bodies lose lots of water, so it is important to drink plenty of fluids if you want to avoid any heat exhaustion such as dizziness and headaches.

But how much water is enough?

Well, the amount of water is dependent on various factors; climate conditions, intensity and duration of exercise, your diet and even the clothes you wear. However, we found a handy and simple scientific formula* to find out how much water you should drink.

For those of you who don’t drink much water, this might seems like a lot of water to consume but maybe some of the following tips will help:

Buy a water bottle with a straw It’s much more efficient than picking up a bottle; unscrewing it and tilting it back to drink. Instead, sipping through a straw creates a vacuum where we are ingesting only liquid, not liquid and oxygen, which means we are taking in more liquid in each sip.

Eat your water Roughly 20% of our daily water intake comes from solid foods such as fruits and vegetables. Cucumber has the highest water content (96.7%), followed by lettuce (95%) or watermelon (93%).

Set an alarm Alarms can be used for many purposes. On this occasion it can help reprogram your mind for better drinking habits. Simply set an alarm for every hour to remind yourself to pick up your glass/bottle and drink up.
