How are you going to make 2020 your best year yet?
What practical things can you implement this year?
Ensure you take your annual leave this year!
It can be hard to leave your work behind and go on a break, but you definitely deserve it. Make sure you don’t overwork yourself and take regular, relaxing breaks to unwind!
Keep a schedule
Time management is one of the best stress management techniques. Keeping a schedule of all your tasks and key dates will enable you to keep on top of your duties and keep organised, so you remember not to forget your best friend’s neighbour’s birthday!
What simple but achievable goals can you set for the New Year?
Remember to be mindful
We spend so much time thinking about what happened two weeks ago, or what’s on our list for tomorrow, constantly our mind is churning. Remember to take time to be in the present and appreciate moment you are in. Whether you are driving to work, or eating your dinner, take time to notice the scenery and the noises you can hear.Click here to watch Neil Shah sharing a mindful breathing technique we call ‘Baby Breath’.
Laugh everyday
Make sure you do something that will make you laugh every day, whether it’s watching a comedy show, meeting up with good friends or just a phone call. Laughing is an excellent way to relieve stress and relax. Not only does it increase your oxygen intake, but also releases endorphins, your feel good hormones, also known to aid pain relief. Making you feel happier and relaxed. So a little chuckle every day is a great step to a happier life.
Put the past in the past
This is a new year, and it can be a new start. Leave all the negativity of 2019 in the past and start looking forward to your new, fresh, healthy lifestyle. Keeping a positive outlook will help you to maintain this.
There are plenty of other areas that you might want to focus on in the new year, such as relationships, finances, health and fitness goalsor how you can make more of a positive difference in the world.
One step in the right direction may be setting aside sufficient ‘me time’ each week, and perhaps spend less time on your devices and social media and using that time to invest in something that will allow you to grow mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually. Also given the rapid and constant nature of change that we are subjected to in the way we live our lives, becoming accustomed to change will increase your resilience. Challenge yourself to become more comfortable with change. Start by changing one aspect of your daily routine each week. Have a green tea instead of a double mocha choca latte with whipped cream, try a different gym class, get off the bus or train a stop early and walk the rest of the way, or try a cuisine you have never experienced before.
There are so many ways to approach being a ‘new you’ in 2020, but what matters is that the changes you choose to make are ones that you will most benefit from, and enjoy, which in turn you will result in an increased chance of sticking to them. Please remember to also crucial success factors – accountability and support! Who is going to hold you accountable and who is going to support you in creating the ‘new you’
